The Sour Science š„
The Paul Brother's grift has gotten Netflix to lure Mike Tyson out of retirement for big bucks.
āGod, it would be good to be a fake somebody rather than a real nobody.ā - Mike Tyson
Iām so upset with Netflix for helping facilitate the Mike Tyson vs Jake Paul fight. This is another terrible sideshow for boxing that the media and general public will roll their eyes over. Hereās to another obituary for the sport of boxing. RIP to the sport of kings.
The Sweet Science has gone sour and UFC has taken their lunch. Being the heavyweight champion of the world meant everything in all sports. The king of kinds. The fight game has become a farce. Itās been a sport being subjected to death by a thousand cuts. Everyone from the mob to Don King and now the multiple alphabet soup organizations has long led this exploitive public execution go one for almost a century now. I wish Dana White took over boxing. They need one strong governing body that weeds out the rest of the trash from the sport. Itās become a sport hard to follow ever since HBO and Showtime got out of weekly fights and then having ESPN push it further down as a fringe sport that is used as a punchline by hack reporters.
That being said, the sport of boxing has managed to hang in there with Keith Richards and roaches as the remaining survivors but itās becoming less relevant by the Netflix deal. Shame on Netflix for indulging some YouTube hacks passing them off as professional boxers. I will give credit to the Paul brothers for showing up in shape and showing off some serious athlete abilities. If they were serious theyād actually fight real current active boxers and not retired athletes looking for a payday and some media attention. I canāt blame Tyson for wanting to take another big payday at age 57. Even Joe Louis wrestled when it was all over for him.
The UFC is the top dog now in the fight game and I doubt boxing will ever achieve its greatness. Too many gifted athletes would rather venture off into other sports rather than get their heads bashed in and then have their earnings stolen by some crooked promoter. Boxing needs a stronger governing body and at least a few networks/streamers that will air all the developing fighters and future champions. Itās an investment into a new fanbase that I doubt anyone is currently willing to invest in.
Where did it all go wrong for boxing? Iāve listed my reasons below.
Boxing's popularity has fluctuated over the years due to several factors:
Competition from other sports: With the rise of MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) and other combat sports, boxing faces increased competition for viewership and athlete talent.
Health concerns: The sport's physicality and potential for long-term health risks, especially regarding head injuries, have raised concerns among participants and audiences alike.
Lack of charismatic personalities: In some periods, boxing has struggled to produce charismatic, marketable stars who can capture the public's attention and drive interest in the sport.
Promotional challenges: Issues within boxing's promotional structure, including disputes between promoters, sanctioning bodies, and fighters, have sometimes led to fragmented events and decreased overall appeal.
Changing media landscape: Shifts in how people consume sports, such as streaming services and digital platforms, have altered the traditional broadcasting and revenue models for boxing.
Societal changes: Changes in societal values and interests can also influence the popularity of sports, with some audiences preferring different forms of entertainment or physical activities.
It's important to note that while boxing may face challenges in certain aspects, it still retains a dedicated fan base and continues to produce notable events and athletes.
